  • I consider myself to. be, broadly speaking, a Physical Geographer.  More specific research interests include Quaternary palaeoenvironments (using proxies including pollen, diatoms, organic geochemistry, stable isotopes and sedDNA); land use and land cover change, land degradation (tools include remote sensing imagery and associated statistical analysis); soil erosion and soil conservation, human impact, the Anthropocene, sustainability, socio-ecological systems, geographical education.

  • Meadows has authored or co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles, has a Google Scholar h-index = 51, and co-edited several books including Geomorphology and Society (Springer, 2016) and Research Directions: Challenges and Achievements of Modern Geography (Springer, 2024) and Geography and the Anthropocene (Istanbul University Press, 2024). Meadows has played a leading role in global sustainability research, highlighting the importance of geography in addressing environmental challenges. Meadows has played a significant role within the International Geographical Union, having  served as Secretary-General and Treasurer (2010 to 2018) and President  (2020–2024).  He has successfully supervised more than 40 MSc and 14 PhD candidates at the University of Cape Town as well as several more at East China Normal University and Nanjing University.



  • Meadows is currently co-chair of ATES (The Associaion of Trans-Eurasia Exchange and Silk Road Civilizaon Development.  He is a former editor of the South African Geographical Journal.  He has held, or continues to hold, review editorial positions on the following journals:  Catena, Land Degradation and Development, Fundamental Research, Geoderma Regional, Geography and Sustainability, Quaternary Science Reviews, Geographical Research, Journal of Arid Environments, Natural Hazards, Progress in Physical Geography, South African Geographical Journal, The Holocene, Journal of Arid Environments, Progress in Earth and Planetary Science, Geography-Environment-Sustainability, Indian Geographical Journal, Frontiers in Quaternary Science, Frontiers in Palaeoecology


  • Meadows has taught a wide range of undergraduate courses during his tenure at various universities.  In particular he has been responsible for freshman classes introducing physical geography and has also developed curricular in Biogeography, Geomorphorphology, Human Impact on the Environment in the Anthropocene, and graduate courses in Quaternary Environments, and Interrogating Southern African Landscapes.  He contributes to freshman and graduate classes in the School of Geography and Ocean Sciencee at Nanjing University.
