Professor Lu received his PhD in Physical Geography from Nanjing University. He is currently Professor and Academic chair of the School of Geography and Ocean Science, Nanjing University. He serves as Vice President of the Geographical Society of China, Vice Chair of the Teaching Steering Committee for Geography Programs under the Ministry of Education of China, and a member of the Platform Management Committee of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). He was appointed as a Changjiang Distinguished Professor by the Ministry of Education in 2009, was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2003, and was selected as a National Leading Expert in Science and Technology Innovation in 2013. He is also the Principal Investigator of an Innovative Research Group funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Key Research and Development Program of Climate Change of China. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of 《Science China Earth Sciences》《Acta Geographica Sinica》《Global and Planetary Change》, and several other international and national journals.
Professor Lu teaches undergraduate courses including 《Fundamentals of Geographical Science》《Physical Geography》and 《Introduction to Earth Science and the Resources and Environment》.
His research interests include monsoon climate evolution, geomorphic processes, and the interactions between Pleistocene human behavior and environmental change. He has carried out more than one hundred field and marine scientific expeditions across the Chinese Loess Plateau, deserts in China and abroad, the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, the Arabian Sea, and the North Pacific. He has also made significant contributions to laboratory development and the establishment of analytical facilities in both of Nanjing University and Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Professor Lu has published more than 400 scientific papers, which have been cited over 26,000 times, with an h-index of 81. He has supervised more than 70 graduate students.
