Hengyu Gu is an Assistant Professor, Senior Research Fellow, and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Geography and Ocean Science, Nanjing University.
His research and teaching primarily focus on population geography, with particular attention to the geographical processes of talent mobility and their interactions with regional development. His main academic contributions include:
(1) developing new spatial analytical methods for talent mobility flows that explicitly address spatial dependence and zero-inflation biases, thereby revealing the complex patterns of talent concentration across multiple spatial scales and different types of talent;
(2) advancing a theoretical framework in which immobile and non-tradable local qualities drive talent concentration, and identifying the key mechanisms through which non-economic factors shape the geography of talent; and
(3) uncovering the transition from the demographic dividend to the talent dividend, as well as its future pathways, thereby challenging the pessimistic narrative that the decline of the demographic dividend necessarily constrains China’s regional development.
He has published more than 80 papers as first or corresponding author in leading journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS), Annals of the American Association of Geographers (AAAG), Regional Studies, and Acta Geographica Sinica. He has also authored two academic monographs and translated one scholarly book. He has been recognized among China’s Top 1% Highly Cited Scholars for two consecutive years. Several of his papers have been selected as ESI Highly Cited Papers or reprinted in full by Renmin University of China Reprinted Materials.
He has been selected for the Young Elite Scientists Sponsorship Program of the China Association for Science and Technology in the field of human geography, the National Postdoctoral Program for Recruiting Overseas Talent, the Jiangsu “Mass Innovation and Entrepreneurship Doctor” Program, and the Jiangsu Young Talents Program for Science and Technology Think Tanks. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
He serves as a member of the Population Geography Committee of the Geographical Society of China, Vice Chair of the Human Geography Committee of the Geographical Society of Jiangsu Province, and a council member of the Chinese Society of African Studies.
